Chinese School, 19th Century Portrait of the American Bark JAMES S. STONE in Chinese Waters. Chinese characters inscribed on the stretcher, vessel identified on bow and stern. Oil on canvas, depicting the three-masted vessel flying an American and signal flags, with figures on deck and Chinese junks and another sailing vessel in the distance, 18 x 23 1/2 in., in a gilt gesso wooden frame. Condition: Relined, craquelure, scattered retouch primarily to hull and foreground water. Provenance: By family descent. Note: The James S. Stone was built in East Boston in 1868 for Jas. Stone & Co. The vessel's master was C. H. Phinney.
