Attributed to Joseph H. Davis (American, 1811-1865) Portrait of "John B. Johnson. Aged 34 Jan'y 17th 1836. Belinda M. Johnson Aged 11 Years May 22 1836. Lydia H. Johnson. Aged 33. April 18th 1836." Unsigned, the subjects and their ages identified in ornamental calligraphy below. Watercolor, graphite, and ink on paper, 10 1/4 x 14 in., in a period grain-painted gesso and wood frame. Condition: Laid down, toning, stains, edges trimmed. Note: Joseph H. Davis was an itinerant portrait artist who worked primarily in Dover, New Hampshire, and nearby Maine towns. His works there span between the years 1832 to 1837. laid down onto cardboard long ago, edges trimmed to just above garland rosettes, and to edge of calligraphy lettering, the thin mat obscures some of the letters.
