Federal Mahogany and Mahogany Veneer Inlaid Fall-front Desk, attributed to Solomon Hayward, Plympton, Massachusetts, early 19th century, the interior of central drawer flanked by three valance drawers and compartments and nine stepped drawers, original brasses embossed "H J," old surface, (imperfections), ht. 43 1/4, wd. 38 3/4, dp. 16 in. Provenance: According to family history, the cabinetmaker made the desk for his brother as a wedding gift. It remained in the Hayward family until 1924, when it was purchased from a relative by Charles A. Whiting, principal in the Whiting & Davis Company, and great-grandfather of the consignor. lid cracked and broken at left hinge; left thumbmolding on lid damaged; losses of inlay on base.
