William Pierce Stubbs (American, 1842-1909) Portrait of the Ship P. N. Blanchard. Signed "W.P. Stubbs" l.l., vessel identified on bow. Oil on canvas, 22 1/4 x 36 in., in a period ornate gilt gesso frame. Condition: Relined, minor scattered retouch to background. Note: The ship P. N. Blanchard was built in Yarmouth, Maine, in May of 1876 by the Blanchard family. She was named after Capt. Perez N. Blanchard, who was a well known master mariner, ship builder, and prominent resident of Yarmouth. The vessel was used extensively to haul coal from Boston to South America and as far as the Philippines. there are about thirteen 1/2 -3/4 in. size spots and several very small spots of retouch to the background sky above sails and vessel .
