Probably French, fourth quarter 19th century. A large incise carved black slate mantel clock, the stepped projecting pediment over a frieze centered with inset bas relief brass plaque depicting a classical scene with robed figures and chariots, over the rack striking and two piece circular dial with polished slate face and gilt incised Roman numerals, with a beveled glass cover, flanked at either side by a pair of parcel gilt bronze and brass Corinthian columns, raised on a rectangular plinth and four flat square feet. Clock strikes on a gong at the hours and half hours. Movement is stamped ‘7818’ and ‘92’, pendulum is also stamped ‘7818’. Approximate height 19.75", width 16.5", depth 9".
