Jay N. ("Ding") Darling (American, 1876-1962) Design For First Federal "Duck Stamp" - 1934, 1934. Signed "Ding Darling" in pencil l.r., titled in pencil l.l. Etching on paper, plate size 6 1/4 x 8 3/4 in. (15.9 x 22.2 cm), framed together with the duck stamp. Condition: Scattered pinpoint foxing, not examined out of frame. N.B. The Federal Duck Stamp Program was originated by Jay N. ("Ding") Darling when he designed the first stamp in 1934.1 Ducks Stamps, which are officially called "Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamps," are pictorial stamps produced by the U.S. Postal Service for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Originally, these stamps were created as the federal licenses required for hunting migratory waterfowl. Today, however, they serve as a tool for wetland conservation: ninety-eight cents out of every dollar produced from Duck Stamp sales aids in the purchase or lease of wetland habitat for protection in the National Wildlife Refuge System.2 Duck Stamps and their associated products, such as their original prints, have been and continue to be widely collected. The early designers of these popular stamps include Ding Darling, Frank Benson, Lynn Bogue Hunt, and Aiden Lassell Ripley. 1Ordeman, John T., Frank W.
