Large Carved and Polychrome Painted Wooden Eagle, found in Bucksport, Maine, late 18th/early 19th century, the fully carved pine figure likely carved by a ship figurehead carver, is carved in two pieces, with outstretched wings, clutching a document in its talons, possibly the Constitution, painted in the colors of the American flag, possibly painted for the Centennial celebration of 1876; over original gilded surface, (paint losses, minor joinery separation, and cracks), ht. 33, wd. 54 1/2 in. Exhibitions: Loaned to the Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, Maine, from 1998 until 2005. --K
