Endicott & Co. , lithographers and publishers, (New York, 19th Century) United States Iron Clad Ram. Dictator. Designed by J. Ericsson. Built at the Delamater Iron Works, New York. 1863. Identified in inscriptions in the matrix. Lithograph with hand-coloring on paper, Sheet size: 18 3/4 x 26 1/2 in., in a molded wood frame with gilt liner. Condition: Margins of 3/4 in. or more, toning, tears, moisture stains. Note: The Dictator was the first purpose-built sea-going US monitor. She was launched December 2, 1863, and commissioned on November 11, 1864. She was sent to take part in the assault on Fort Fisher, a stronghold of the Confederate States of America in southern North Carolina near the mouth of the Cape Fear River, but had to return to port with mechanical problems, was decommissioned to reserve on September 5, 1865. She was recommissioned for for a period between 1874 and 1877 but was finally sold for scrap in September 1883.
