Chinese School, 19th Century Portrait of the British Clipper Bidston Hill off Calcutta. Signed "Kwong Sang Calcutta" l.r., vessel identified on pennant and bow. Oil on canvas, c. 1860, 25 1/2 x 35 in., in a period frame. Condition: Relined, craquelure, retouch. Note: The British Clipper Bidston Hill was a four-masted iron ship built in 1886, launched at the shipyard of T. Royden & Sons., Liverpool, for W. Price & Co., Liverpool. In 1887 it was dismasted off Cape Horn and was repaired. In 1893-1894 it was re-rigged as a four-masted barque. On July 31, 1905 it was wrecked at Cape Furneaux, Staten Island, under command of Captain J. Kendall, the crew was later rescued by an Argentine steamer.
