Attributed to Joseph Whiting Stock (American, 1815-1855) Portrait of George Whitefield Wales. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1840, depicting the boy with his head resting on his right hand on the arm of a Classical sofa wearing a black tie, a pleated white shirt and a gold vest; his left arm extended around his dog, a water spaniel, lying next to him, 32 x 40 in., in an original deep gold-painted cove-molded frame. Condition: Good, scattered minor retouch, two unobtrusive patches, craquelure. Literature: The Paintings and the Journal of Joseph Whiting Stock , by Juliette Thomlinson, 1976. The book illustrates a number of stylistically similar examples of the artist's work. In his journal written in 1843, the artist mentions being in East Randolph, Massachusetts, where he painted a number of portraits including one of Elisha Wales.
