Anglo School, 19th Century The Action between the Chesapeake and Shannon. Unsigned, title engraved on brass plaque below. Oil on canvas, 14 x 17 in., in a gilt gesso frame. Condition: Relined, minor retouch. Note: A late 19th/early 20th c. paper label for the New York gallery Kennedy & Co., identifies the artist as "J.S. Schetky," (Scottish, 1778-1874). This painting of a War of 1812-1814 naval battle depicts the American frigate USS Chesapeake, commanded by Captain James Lawrence, which was attacked and captured by the HMS Shannon under the command of Captain Philip Bowes Vere Broke. The battle took place on June 1, 1813 and lasted only 15 minutes.
