Jane Peterson (American, 1876-1965) Coastal View Rockport Signed "JANE PETERSON" l. l., identified on a label from Hollis Taggart Galleries, New York, affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, 30 1/4 x 40 1/2 in. (76.8 x 102.9 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, subtle craquelure. N.B. Jane Peterson was born in Elgin, Illinois, in 1876. Her parents encouraged her painting, and when Jane was eighteen she went to New York to study art at the Pratt Institute. Later, she arranged to tour Europe with fellow artist Henry Snell and his wife in order to study further. Enchanted with both the subject matter available and the more accepting attitudes of Europeans toward both her work and her gender, Peterson decided to remain in Paris. She also traveled to cities whose light was transformed by the sea, Venice and Constantinople in particular. Her interest in the effects of light and reflection is apparent in her views of Cape Ann, and is repeated throughout many of her landscapes. For further information see Joseph, J. Jonathan, Jane Peterson: An American Artist (Boston: Privately Printed, 1981).
