David Burliuk (Russian/American, 1882-1967) In the Village Signed "BURLIUK" l. r. Oil on canvas, 20 x 24 in. (50.8 x 61.0 cm), framed. Condition: Surface grime. N.B. Ukraine-born artist David Burliuk is considered to be the father of Russian Futurism. His bright colors and heavy application of paint created images that were innovative and full of energy. Burliuk combined elements of Fauvism, Expressionism, and Neo-Primitivism to create a unique and avant-garde style. In 1912 he wrote a Russian Futurist manifesto entitled A Slap in the Face of Public Taste . He traveled throughout Europe, Asia, and North America before settling on Long Island in 1922 with his wife, Marussia. Together with his wife, he published the journal, Color & Rhyme from 1937 until 1966.
