George Loftus Noyes (American, 1864-1951) Harbor View Signed "-G. L. Noyes-" l.r., identified on a label from the Clarke Galleries, Stowe, Vermont, on the frame. Oil on canvas, 24 x 20 in. (61.1 x 51.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch. N.B. Best known for his landscape paintings, George Loftus Noyes spent the majority of his career working in and around Boston. One of his first jobs was at the New England Glass Company in Cambridge where he painted images of fruit and flowers on glass. He traveled to France in 1890 to study with Gustave Courtois, Joseph-Paul Blanc, and Paul-Louis Delance. By 1891 he began his "plein air" paintings and adopted the loose brushstrokes of the French Impressionists. He returned to Boston the following year and began traveling within the U.S. and to Mexico.
