Thomas Hill (American, 1829-1908) Hetch Hetchy, California Signed "T. Hill" l.l., titled on the reverse. Oil on board, 15 1/2 x 12 1/2 in. (39.4 x 30.5 cm), framed. Condition: Minor retouch, craquelure, surface grime. N.B. Best known for his expansive landscapes of the picturesque California views, Hill was deemed the 'Artist of Yosemite.' First settling in New England after emigrating from England 1844, Hill moved to San Francisco in 1861, in search of a milder climate. He was a founding member of the San Francisco Art Association and served as the director for the California School of Fine Arts. Hill also created nineteen illustrations for John Muir's book, Picturesque California .
