Cooper, James Fenimore (1789-1851), Autograph letter signed, two pages, January 5, 1850, to John Clayton, et al. , (a printer), informing him that he cannot attend a function and commenting on his life as a man of letters, and remarking in strident verse about the importance of other American writers, (very good). Text in part: ". . . Man and boy, my connection with your craft has now lasted quite half a century . . . the accidents of life has caused it to become a serious occupation . . . my pen is always getting me into scrapes for telling the truth...but (Washington) Irving and Paulding may have known more devil than have fallen into my share . . . 'The Devil - a link between the author and the printer: may he come with queries ingeniously few, and return with every one corrected'."
