Circle of Sir Peter Lely (Dutch/English, 1610-1680). "Portrait of Marchioness Rebecca Child", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Formal figural portrait painting depicting an elegant Rebecca Child (English, c.1667-1712) at bust length with curled hair, pale complexion, pink cheeks and wearing a blue dress with pearls and brooch. Inscribed lower left "March. of Worcester, Daughter of S.J. Child, Wanstead House, Sister of Ms. Edward Bullock, and Mother of The Duke of Beaufort". Verso of stretcher hand written note on bottom noting that the sitter is "Marchioness of Worcester daughter of Sir Josiah Child of Wanstead House". Verso of stretcher also with label from Hampton & Sons, Pall Mall, East London. Framed 38" x 33". Unframed 29.5" x 24.75". Note: Sir Josiah Child was a 17th century English merchant, politician and economics writer who married Mary Atwood and had his daughter Rebecca (whom this depicts) who later married Charles Somerset, Marquess of Worcester and bore Henry Somerset, the 2nd Duke of Beaufort, and Henrietta Fitzroy (Somerset), the Duchess of Grafton. Should the note on this painting be accurate, this work would depict a stately member of the English upper class with blood lines to one of the leading merchants of the era known for his wealth and work as Governor of the East India Company.
