Tiffany & Co. Silver Soldered Presentation Coffeepot, late 19th century, lobed pear shaped, with gadroon and shell rims, S-scroll and flowerhead waist, id with berry finial, underside of foot engraved, "GWV from MLV, Nov. 14th 1891, Swannanoa," monogrammed, ht. 19 1/4 in. Note: The presentation engraving is believed to be a gift to George Washington Vanderbilt (1862-1914), possibly from his mother, Maria Louisa Vanderbilt (nee Kissam, 1821-1896), a major intellectual influence in Vanderbilt life. George W. Vanderbilt built his Biltmore Estate after discovering the land on a trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The town of Swannanoa is halfway between Ashville and Black Mountain, named after its position along the Eponymous river.
