Provenance: From the artist to a childhood friend, then purchased c. 1981 by the present owner. N.B. Wilhelm Ernst Hans Franz Heysen was born in 1877 in Hamburg, Germany and came to South Australia with his family at the age of 7. He showed an early interest in art, especially drawing and painting, and was drawn to the rural landscape of Hahndorf, where he often visited friends during school holidays. Heysen trained as an artist in Adelaide. He showed such promise that four local patrons underwrote four years of study in Paris and a European tour. His early paintings met with great success and in 1912 he acquired The Cedars, a property near Hahndorf. He built a studio there, where he painted for the rest of his life. Heysen placed great importance on draftsmanship with a masterly control of line, shape, and volume. His paintings were frequently the result of many hundreds of drawings executed on location and in his studio. The view depicted here is probably the area around Hahndorf.
