Shaker Painted Milk Bench, Canterbury, New Hampshire Community, 19th century, the rectangular pine top with chamfered edges overhangs the splayed legs with lamb's tongue front edges ending in V-shaped cutouts, and is also supported by two shaped brackets under the center of the top, with vestiges of original bittersweet paint, (surface imperfections), ht. 13, wd. 37, dp. 12 in. Provenance: This bench was purchased at the Canterbury, New Hampshire Shaker Village, at about the time the barn burned. According to the accompanying letter from the consignor, "I knew Eldress Bertha Lindsay and Sister Marguerite Frost and one of them told me how the bench was used."
