Rare Tin and Glass Instantaneous Light Box, early 19th century, the oval covered tin containing a small glass bottle, wd. 1 7/8, lg. 2 3/4 in. Note: The instantaneous light box was an early form of match igniting. The box held wooden matches which were dipped in a mixture of chlorate of potash and sulphide of antimony, and also small glass bottle containing sulfuric acid. To light the match, the coated tip was dipped into the sulfuric acid and when removed, the match burst into flame. This method was in use between 1810-1835.
