Attributed to Henry Walton (Central New York , 1804-1865) Two Portraits: Mr. Billings and Mrs. Billings, Ithaca, New York area. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 1840's, the gentleman, wearing a dark jacket and cravat and holding a folded newspaper in his right hand, is seated against a red drapery; his wife is seated in a paint-decorated chair, wearing a dark dress with white lace collar and cuffs, resting her left hand on a table covered with a green patterned tablecloth and holding a book in her other hand, 29 1/2 x 24 1/2 in., replaced giltwood frames. Condition: Restored, minor retouch, some craquelure. Note: Henry Walton, known for his lithographs, watercolors, and oil paintings, is best known for his oil portraits from 1839-51, made in the central New York area. He often presented sitters in interior scenes decorated with patterned tablecloths and carpets.
