Painted Silk Banner Depicting the Great Seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, America, 19th century, the seal consisting of a blue shield with an Indian, holding in his right hand a bow, and in his left hand an arrow, point downward, and, in the upper corner of the blue field, above his right arm, a silver star with five points, the crest is a wreath of blue and gold, and a right arm, bent at the elbow, with the hand grasping a broadsword, all above a banner with the motto "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem" which in translation is "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty," 45 1/2 x 41 1/2 in. , framed.
