Melanesian Polychrome Carved Wood Mask, New Ireland, c. late 19th century, the highly stylized form with pierced mouth, pointed teeth, large protruding tongue, hooked nose, pierced eyes with operculum centers, one upturned ear, plant fiber hair, painted with highly stylized designs in black, red, and white pigment, (wood loss, damage), ht. 15 1/2 in. Provenance: Bought from the Australian Travel Service, exhibited at the S. F. (San Francisco ?) Fair, 1939.
