Attributed to Polidoro Lanzani (Italian, 1515-1565) The Repose in Egypt Unsigned, identified on labels on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 32 1/2 x 41 3/4 in. (62.6 x 106.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouched, surface grime, craquelure with alligatoring. Provenance: Thomas Jefferson Bryan collection, by bequest to the New York Historical Society, sold at Parke-Bernet Galleries, December 2, 1971, catalogue number 14. Literature: Companion to the Bryan Gallery of Christian Art (New York Historical Society, 1853), pp. 25-26, number 33. N.B. The Bryan Collection described this painting as a work by Titian. Recent scholarship relates a group of pictures similar to this work to Titian's student, Polidoro da Lanzani. The figural grouping in this work is closely related to the Polidoro in the collection of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
