Dwight Blaney (American, 1865-1944) View from Ironbound Island to Frenchman Bay Signed and dated "D. Blaney 1908" l.l. Oil on canvas, 27 x 34 1/2 in. (68.5 x 87.6 cm), unframed. Condition: Surface grime, craquelure. Provenance: Through the Sargent family of Maine, the 19th owners of Ironbound Island. The island was later sold to Dwight Blaney. N.B. Dwight Blaney was born in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1865. He trained as an architect in Boston and traveled to Europe to paint. His close friend John Singer Sargent encouraged him in this particular pursuit, and Blaney even appears in Sargent's later work. Blaney also greatly admired Monet, whose influence is seen in many of Blaney's landscapes and seascapes. He died in Boston in 1944.
