Carlos Merida (b. Guatemala 1891, ac. (78.7 x 63.5 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, craquelure. Provenance: Gift from the artist to his pupil Constance W. Holden. Holden studied with Merida in Mexico. N.B. Carlos Merida was born in Guatemala in 1891. He traveled extensively, spending most of his time in Europe, the U.S., Guatemala and Mexico. In his travels, he met Picasso, Modigliani, and other artistic leaders of the time who greatly influenced his style. Artistically, he "traveled" from a figurative stage beginning in 1907, to a surrealist period in the 1920's to 40's, to a geometric phase until his death in Mexico in 1984. Over the course of his career he explored his artistic expanse, creating works that ranged from large-scale murals to easel paintings to intricate woodblock prints. Yet through it all, he remained true to his roots-his Maya-Quinche descent had ingrained a sense of tradition and heritage into his life and his art, no matter what his location, style, or medium.
