Artist-Designed 23kt Gold Pendant, Max Ernst, with deeply incised abstract design, dia. 4 1/2 in., no. 4 of 6, piece no. 1768-1744, Marseilles guarantee stamps and maker's mark for Francois Hugo, Aix en Provence, dated 1975, signed, original numbered wood velvet-lined box. Note: Max Ernst (1891-1976) was a founding member of the Dada and Surrealist movements in Cologne and Paris. He worked in a wide range of styles and media. This work resembles his technique of "grattage", which involved the scraping or troweling of pigment from canvas. A retrospective recognizing Ernst as "one of the most significant artists of the 20th century" is currently on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
