Plains Wood and Stone Pipe, Lakota (? ), second half 19th century, the unusual polychrome ash stem carved on one side of the flat with a frontal portrait of a warrior holding a tomahawk in one hand, the other hand tucked into his jacket (?) with painted details, on the reverse is a stylized bird carving, the tapered notched mouthpiece end with two rectangular cutouts, red, yellow, green, and black pigments, the red pipestone bowl in T-form with dark patina, lg. of stem 22 1/2 in.
