Central Plains Beaded and Quilled Hide Pipebag, Lakota, c. last quarter 19th century, the soft hide bag roll-beaded at the top with one lane of beadwork descending to a lower panel, beaded on both sides with multicolored geometric devices on a white ground, polychrome quilled rawhide slats and long fringe from the bottom, (quill loss, minor bead loss), lg. 43 in. Provenance: John Greene, after descent through the Greene family. George A. Greene Sr. (1864-1933) married Elizabeth Gallagher, daughter of Peter and Nanniet Gallagher. Peter Gallagher (1805-1871) was an Indian agent, and this is bag is believed to have been given to the family from the Shoshone culture, possibly by the Nez Perce, a large Idaho tribe.
