George II Silver Coffeepot, London, 1759, maker possibly John Berthelot, baluster form with gadrooned rims, the domed lid with vertically reeded inverted mushroom finial, the serpentine spout ending in acanthus, with serpentine fruitwood handle carved at top with acanthus, ht. 12 in., approx. 33 troy oz. Note: Engraved to underside with marriage monogram W over IS, and bearing inscription "This belonged to Joseph 1733-1816 and Sarah Wharton 1740- was used at Meschianza." Joseph and Sarah Wharton were prominent residents of Philadelphia, PA during the Revolutionary War period, and their home was the site of the great fete known as "Meschianza" held by Major General Andre in the spring of 1778 in honor of departing General Clinton.
