American School, 19th Century Portrait of a Child Holding a Hat and Buggy Whip. c. 1835. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, depicting the child with golden curls holding a buggy whip in one hand and a straw hat with a pink sash in the other, standing before a red paint decorated chair draped with a paisley shawl, 30 1/2 x 25 in., framed. Condition: Retouch to arm and cheek. Provenance: DeAngelis Estate, Holland Patent, New York. Note: This portrait, while not identified, was probably a grandchild of a notable figure in our country's Revolutionary War, prosperous sea captain, and investor, Captain Pascal Charles Joseph DeAngelis. In 1776, at the age of thirteen, he was one of the first Italian natives to bear arms against the British and served the entire duration of the Revolutionary War. He later commandeered several merchant vessels between America and the West Indies. In 1795 he and his family settled on a large tract of land in New York, which he bought from Lord Holland with three other investors, known as Holland Patent. He also invested his capital in sawmills, gristmills, and blacksmith shops, and built the first tavern. He and his wife Elizabeth had eleven children. One child, William, his wife Elizabeth, and their nine children came to live in the homestead after the captain died, and one of these children was probably the sitter in the portrait.
