In the fall of that year she saw the Fauvist works of Henri Matisse at the Salon d'Automne . Her style absorbed the Fauvist palette and forceful brushstroke. At about this time she developed an intimate relationship with Scottish colorist John Duncan Ferguson. The result was a style of expressive color. By the 1920s (the period of the painting presented here) the vivid color gave way to a concentration in expressive gestures and planes of color.
