Frederick Arthur Bridgman (American, 1847-1928) Halloween Signed and dated "F. A.Bridgman 18.." l.r. Oil on canvas, 27 x 45 in. (68.5 x 114.3 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure. Provenance: Private New England collection. N.B. Although Bridgman's love of painting was kindled in his native America, much of his training took place in Paris in the ateliers of masters such as Gerome. Although he is perhaps best known for his Orientalist subjects, Bridgman was fascinated with all aspects of street and rural life as in the painting presented here. Originally this painting was shown in 1869 at the spring Paris Salon under the title Le Carnaval en Bretagne and was subsequently reproduced as a print under the same title.
