Southwest Painted Wood Box, probably Hopi, late 19th century, possibly unique, the rectangular lidded form painted on the lid and three sides with Kachina images using black on a yellow ochre ground, constructed using square nails, forged iron latch, and leather hinges, the inside with remnant commercial paper liner, ht. 5 3/4, lg. 13 1/2 in. N.B. Two of the Kachinas are virtually identical to those painted on ceramic tiles in the Heard Museum from the Fred Harvey Collection. The Fred Harvey tiles are virtually identical to some at the Museum of the American Indian with a Nampeyo collection history. Literature: Fred Harvey Collection Fine Arts Collection, 1976, p. 59.
