Pair of Waylande de Santis Gregory Vases, (American, 1905-1971) decorated with double tailed mermaids, fish, and aquatic foliage in purple with gold design, and purple, gold, and green "bubbles" spotting the gray background, signed "Waylande Gregory," ht. 15 in. N. B. : Gregory was born in Baxter Springs, Kansas. He began studying in Kansas at an early age and continued on to study in Chicago under Lorado Taft at the Art Institute, and in Florence, Italy. Gregory worked at Cowan Art Pottery from 1928-32, and later set up his own studio in Bound Brook, New Jersey. Receiving notable awards for his work, Gregory exhibited his talents in both ceramics and bronzes. Commissioned for the 1939 World's Fair, he creating the largest ceramic installation at the time, The Fountain of the Atoms.
