Antonio Jacobsen (American, 1850-1921) Portrait of the Yacht Marguerite. Signed and dated "A JACOBSEN 1907" l.r. Oil on board, depicting the yacht which carries the New York City Yacht Club burgee and the private signal of Henry W. Lamb, sight size 22 x 36 in., in a period oak frame with gessoed floral decoration. Condition: A few small paint losses to sky and edges. Provenance: Tradition suggests that the painting descended in the family of the captain of the Marguerite from whom it was purchased. Initially it could well have been a gift from the owner Harold Lamb as a token of thanks for good service. Lamb was a banker and manufacturer. He was also a member of the New York Yacht Club and once served as Commodore of the Eastern Yacht Club. He retired shortly after the painting was executed and died in 1926. The Marguerite is listed in the 1894 New York Yacht Club year book. She was 170/ 2/3 tons, 96 ft. 10 1/2 in. lg. overall, with a 21 ft. beam. She was built in 1888 by G. Lawley & Son and designed by Edward Burgess, a partnership which designed the 1885 America's Cup winner Puritan.
