Chinese School, 19th Century View of Whampoa Anchorage. Unsigned, penciled inscription on reverse stretcher reads"Whampoa, China, 10 miles below Canton where the foreign ships anchor and receive and de--- cargo 1850." Oil on canvas depicting ships with their masts lowered as they wait to take on cargo, 18 x 23 1/2 in., in a period carved foliate, brown lacquered frame with gilt inner edge. Condition: Lined, craquelure, paint loss with associated tears, u.c., u.l. Provenance: According to family tradition this painting descended through the family to the great grandchildren of a man who was a supercargo for Crocker and Sturgis of Boston.
