Miniature Woven Splint Basket, probably Taghkanic, New York, 19th century, round shallow form with tapered sides, slightly domed at the center, two looped splint handles, the interior side with a small woven splint compartment, twilled chain spiral pattern on base, ht. 1 1/2, dia. 5 1/2 in. Note: Made in an area close to the Mount Lebanon Shaker village, the Taghkanic basketry influenced the fancy baskets the Shakers made for the "outside world."
