Hayes, Rutherford B. (1822-1893), Autograph Letter Signed, August 24th, 1875, three pages, to Fred Wilkes of Poland, Ohio, a lengthy letter discussing who is reading his correspondence, answering questions concerning the Whigs and the Democrats, their philosophies and tendencies, and ending with family news, (seal loss not affecting text, very good). Text in part: "The tendency of Whig moretimes is conservative perhaps in some measure aristocratic...the only question it seems to me worth considering is which are we most in danger of - Aristocracy or Anarchy. If the former I'm a Democrat, if the latter a Whig...A large majority of intelligent foreigners are Democrats, as to ignorant foreigners, they stand in the same category with ignorant natives....Excuse me Fred, that is the longest strain of politics I've sung in a twelve months."
