Alfred Thompson Bricher (American, 1837-1908) Coastal View, Sunset Signed "ATBricher" l. l. Oil on canvas, 15 x 33 in. (38.1 x 83.8 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, varnish inconsistencies, craquelure. Private New England collection. N.B. In the late 1880s, Bricher sketched and painted a series of pieces of this coastal stretch. He used the setting to experiment with tone and light, keeping the landscape virtually unchanged but varying the coloration and tonal relationship between land, water, and sky. The piece presented here is very closely related to Coastal Scene , in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Florida.
