Robert Spear Dunning (American, 1829-1905) Opulent Still Life with Peaches and Honeycomb Signed and dated "RSDunning 1871" l. r. Oil on canvas, 30 1/2 x 25 1/2 in. (77.5 x 65 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, varnish inconsistencies, craquelure. Provenance: A private collection. N.B. Robert Spear Dunning founded the Fall River School with the opening of his studio on Fall River's Main Street in 1853. With its silver urn, expensive fabric, and ornately carved furniture, the painting presented here reflects the opulence and growth of the city in the late 19th century. In spite of the lush and formal qualities of the work, Dunning takes the opportunity to lighten the mood of the composition by including a self portrait within the carved details of the table leg in the immediate foreground.
