Benjamin E. Shute (American (Georgia/ Wisconsin), 1905-1986). "Still Life with Flowers in Vase" - 1971, oil on canvas, monogrammed lower left "BES". Painting depicting a still life at center on a partially painted blue background, the flowers grouped in a green vase and consisting of white and red poppies with green leaves. Inscribed to verso of canvas "45 Minute Presentation 4/15/71", likely in reference to a work he did during his teaching years at the Atlanta College of Art. Framed approximately 31.25" x 25.25", unframed approximately 24" x 18". Note: Ben Shute (American, 1905-1986) was an artist, arts advocate and co-founder of the Atlanta College of Art. Shute trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and then moved to Atlanta in 1928 to work temporarily for the High Museum School of Art in a teaching capacity. His position and efforts with the High Museum School of Art were long lasting--he worked at the institution for approximately six decades, and helped build the art school's reputation through its national accreditation. In the mid 1940s, Shute established the Southeastern Annual Exhibition that showcased work from 9 states in the Southern region. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), New York, Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, and Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. In 1985, the artist was awarded the Governor's Award in the Arts for Georgia.
