Chinese, likely Republic period (1912-1949). A matched pair of carved rosewood elbow chairs or armchairs, each profusely pierced and carved, the back decorated with opposing four claw writhing dragons centered with the flaming pearl amidst cloud scroll and enclosing the paneled openwork back featuring the profile of a dragon and cloud scroll, the arm rests also carved as open mouth dragons over the serpentine seat with foliate carved border and apron pierced with central kylin and phoenix raised on zoomorphic supports united by a recessed stretcher.
