Punu people, African (Gabon, Ngounie River region), 20th century. Pair of hand carved and polychrome figural tribal masks or mukudj, each with striated dark stylized hair, dark lips, pierced slits on bulbous protrusions as eyes, rounded ears, and remnants of white kaolin clay faces - each with lozenge cicatrization markings on forehead and one also with rectilinear cicatrization beside each ear. Each drilled to sides for hanging. One slightly larger approximate height 10", width 6.75", depth 4".
