Abstract figural painting depicting a statuesque nude female, her hips draped in cloth, her torso turned such that her face is shown in profile, with gesturally rendered abstract geometric planes in the background. Framed approximately 52" x 40". Unframed approximately 48" x 36". Provenance: From the Private Collection of the author Mr. William T. Parker, Atlanta, Georgia. Note: In the vein of Romare Bearden (American, 1911-1988) and Jacob Lawrence (American, 1917-2000), William Tolliver is counted among the great African American artists of the 20th century. Tolliver's work is characterized by his self-taught genius and the resulting evolutionary progression of his chosen materials and even style of painting.
