Japanese, late Edo Period (1603-1868). A unique Satsuma decorated pottery koro, or lidded urn or jar, of cube form raised on a round plinth base with tripod cyma scroll feet, with cube form body bearing applied drop ring handles at shoulder issuing cord knotted into bow with dangling tassel ends, the paneled body sides with hand painted figural scenes depicting courtly and religious figural groups, with squat incurvate neck issuing folded linen style undulating flared mouth, with squared domical lid bearing consisent decoration and topped with figural depiection of a male fu dog with ball under one front paw, the whole hand painted in tones of peach, teal, and black and heightened with gilding. Underside inscribed in blue under the glaze "Item 11 / FG / B.B.R". Approximate height 12", width 5.375" square.
