Kobayashi Kiyochika (Japanese, 1847-1915), "Night Attack by Our Armed Forces Against the Chinese at Phyong-Yang"-1894, woodblock triptych on paper, with inscription to upper right quadrant of rightmost sheet, with two square printer's marks in red ink at center right of rightmost sheet, with faint inscription in far left margin of leftmost sheet. Three sheet ukiyo-e triptych print depicting seaside battle scene between Japanese and Chinese forces, with figures firing smoking cannons from the bank in the foreground, the calm sea with long boats with many figures with weapons and oars in the midground, and with a smoky battle unfolding under the mountain at the far bank in the distance, with a full moon in misty skies overhead. Framed approximately 18.75" x 32.75". Overall unframed approximately 28.5" x 14.5". Note: Kiyochika was a noted and celebrated Japanese ukiyo-e artist during the Meiji period. He is best known for his scenes of Tokyo and for his hybridization of Japanese and Western styles and motifs. Provenance: From the Estate of Channing S. Jun, M.D., Eastman, Georgia.
