HOWARD PYLE (US ILLUSTRATOR/WRITER 1853-1911), GOUACHE/OIL ON CARDBOARD, 1908, 10 1/8" X 6 3/4":Burning sailing ship in harbor; size is the sight size of what is contained within the frame. Initialed 'P' in the lower left; inscribed in the lower right, "To Joseph Leeriwsky from H. Pyle 1908"; period frame. Family owned - the consignor received it in 1988 from her aunt who had received it as a gift in c. 1960. Verbally authenticated from digital photos by Jim Tottis, curator of American Art, Detroit Institute of Arts, December 22, 2005.
