DIRECTOIRE PERIOD DORE & BLACK PATINATED BRONZE MANTEL CLOCK, C. 1795, H 14", W 11 3/4":"Noble Sauvage". Titled "The Seaman Allegory to Trade". Dial signed "Chepin a Paris". The pyramidal shaped composition of this clock is dominated by the figure of a young black seaman who, in a very casual pose, has his elbow resting on a bale of tobacco leaves and is smoking a pipe.
